Tarot Reading for the Collective ~ August 2020: Soft Powerful Witch

Dear Collective,

After admiring the Modern Witch Tarot Deck by Lisa Sterle for many months (and wondering if I really did need yet ANOTHER tarot deck), I finally purchased my own copy. I am most content with my decision! It arrived only last week and it has already become one of my four workhorse decks that my clients choose from. It’s a beautiful and friendly tarot deck full of colour, fabulous fashion, POC and LGBTIQ folks – a deck truly after my own heart!

[Traditionally a lot of tarot decks have been overly white and heteronormative. Happily, more and more tarot creators are making decks that depict the broader community.]

The questions for August are:

How do we embrace softness?

What tools do we need to reach for?

What offerings do we need to make?

How do we move on?

Let’s begin.

1. How do we embrace softness?

Ace of Wands

Embrace softness by firstly recognising it as a way to lead by example. Gently invoke your own personal power – there’s no need to grab and cling at it. Don’t just go to therapy for your own sake, openly tell people that you are going so that the stigma is removed and others are inspired to go themselves. Don’t just cry for your own release, cry so that others who bear witness to your tears are less afraid to do the same. Don’t just listen deeply to loved ones for their benefit, do it also for those who are watching, they will learn by observing. Embrace softness by feeling when the moment is safe for you to unravel and reveal, soften and open, then by leaning on in to fully express that softness.

2. What tools do we need to reach for?

The Hanged One

With the Hanged One, the tools that we reach for will be within: observation, awareness of sensation and knowing when to pause. Learn to be content with rest, knowing that it is not an escape, but a recharge. The thoughts and feelings that we connect with when slowing down are powerful and real. They might be scary at times as well, but time with the Hanged One allows a natural quietening so that we can feel bigger emotions without being overwhelmed.

3. What offerings do we need to make?

The Lovers

Make offerings that you can live with, and for. Be humble and vulnerable with your offerings of deeds and speech. Be as aligned with your heart as you can be, so that you can trust that what you are giving is absolutely what your heart wants you to do or say. Whether through expressions of heartfelt honesty to beloved ones, dear friends, acquaintances, colleagues or the greater community, be sure that what you offer is what you would happily receive for yourself. Offer hearty, radical love, curious, relaxed understanding, and powerful stillness.

4. How do we move on?

The Hermit

Moving on starts with closing something: an email, a belief system, a misconception or a conflict-oriented thought pattern, and then choosing another way to relate to the world around us. Time out from relentless routine, even if only for a few hours, can be invaluable. Time away from the usual routine is not always available to us though, so if this is the case, be astute in who you choose to talk and listen to.

Are you in wise company, or vacuous company? Can you talk about what lies gently hidden in your heart or are you in overprotection mode? Immerse yourself in spaces where you can be tender so that the harshness of current realities can be put into perspective.

I am part of the team on a new Youtube series called Tarot off the Cuff, in which 10 different professional tarot readers give short, impromptu talks aimed at helping developing readers to deepen their own process. The tarot professional chooses a card on the spot and speaks on whatever comes to mind, including tips, techniques and curious stories of reading professionally. My first video (I pulled the Magician card!) can be watched here. If you enjoy it, subscribe to the channel so that you don’t miss an episode!
