Tarot Reading for the Collective ~ July 2015

This week I was contemplating which tarot deck to use, and my goodness I do have rather a lot of choice with about 60 sets of tarot cards in my ever-growing collection. But instead of moving towards one of my cherished favourites or a new tarot deck I want to get to know better, I … Continue reading

To my dear readers of tarotlogical tales, here we have something a little bit different. I am using The Transparent Tarot by Emily Carding for this Tarot Reading for the Collective. I’ve never seen a deck quite like this one, and the images being printed on transparent plastic makes for some interesting layering, which we … Continue reading

Tarot Reading for the Collective ~ September 2015

This month I am using a deck that I resisted acquiring for a few years. Not sure why, really. Then one day a friend posted a tarot spread using The Wild Unknown on Instagram and it grabbed me! I ordered it that very day. Now that I have it in my possession I can’t imaging why I wouldn’t have wanted its powerful beauty in my life. Now you all get to gaze upon its fabulousness, too. So let us begin.

What more could we want than a stag with rainbow antlers? And not just that, a stag with a vibrating pentacle emanating from between those said rainbow antlers. Oh, Father (King) of Pentacles, what messages do you bring us this month?

Father (King) of Pentacles - The Wild Unknown by Kim Krans

I bring you news of a way forward. A way forward that combines creative verve with grounded insight. I allow you all to gaze upon a future pathway that makes sense to you and inspires you completely. I also remind you to turn away from those who seem content to lie and withhold. Don’t let their pained way of existing, get in your way.

And if you need help with dealing with the pained ones, come to meee!

The Hierophant - The Wild Unknown by Kim Krans

The Hierophant? Welcome and hello! How will you help The Collective right now?

By cracking open your minds and shoving in some strong insights about the need to just stay strong, pay attention and call out the discrepancies! Navigating the world can be tricky at times. All you humans can get so stuck in your ways. And even though I, the Hierophant, may have a reputation for being somewhat stubborn at times, it takes one to know one! So gather your wits, stay strong in your resolve and keep on chipping away at problems that at times seem insurmountable. It will shift eventually, much like a bolt of lightning!

And then come to me for a bit of calm and repose.

The Empress - The Wild Unknown by Kim Krans

Oh, the Empress, thank goodness.

Thank goodness already? It’s only the beginning my friends. Stay with me a while to remind yourselves of the need to stay grounded and real. I will help you quieten your monkey mind by drawing you back into your body. Are you feeling restless? Are you feeling ill-at-ease or anxious? You’re better able to deal with these things if you are being kind to your body. So do that, and watch how easily your intuition unfurls. Now go forth to the Two of Cups for a deeper understanding of commitment.

Two of Cups - The Wild Unknown by Kim Krans

Yes, commitment, and I don’t want to hear any of you lot saying you are afraid of it. What I’m talking about is the joy that comes when you consciously choose situations that feel strong to you. I help you weave presence and mutuality into your lives, and I let you feel good about leaning into paths that inspire change and growth. Commitment with the help of the Two of Cups is commitment that moves and shifts with the seasons of life. Nothing dull going on here.

And now it’s my turn! Hello my friends!

Hello The Fool. Please grace us with your wisdom.

The Fool - The Wild Unknown by Kim Krans

Righto! Well, here I am with the branch. And there you are, feeling a bit stagnant, over it, and in need of a breath of fresh air. Let me be your fresh air! Let me be your bold leap into the unrelenting cosmic whirlpool! You can have one round with me before the seriousness of The Emperor. So bound off strongly my friends, and pull at the curtains as you land so that you can expose any secrets you’ve been keeping from yourself!

Well, I may be serious, but I do like to think that I can offer a kind of stability that keeps you feeling so uniquely ‘you’, that you are able to make clear decisions in amongst all the turmoil that humans are so deft at creating.

Welcome Emperor, please take this reading to a close.

The Emperor - The Wild Unknown by Kim Krans

My Collective, by reconnecting with your sensible sides this month, I assist you in being mindful of the mental pollution that arises when judging others. I want you to all stand strong and bright this month. I want you to open up to possibilities that might seem impossible when you are feeling tired and jaded. I want you to feel that you can strive for bolder action, and I want you to trust that you can protect your beautiful heart from the madness of a greedy and spiritually thwarted society.

Stand with me this month when you need to clear your head, and when you want to trust that the world isn’t out to get you. There are bigger stories unfolding here, and it is up to all of us to be ready to take on the responsibility of moving consciously towards enlightenment. Strive on, dear Collective!

Tarot Reading for the Collective ~ October 2015

Today marks the day that Mercury goes direct once more, and I thought we would all need a tarot reading to celebrate. This Mercury Retrograde (from September 17 – October 9) seemed to be more a bit more of a doozy than usual this time around, and I figured that we would need extra strong help for this month’s Tarot Reading for the Collective. So I got out the Dark Goddess Tarot by Ellen Lorenzi-Prince. Powerful and deep, this deck gifts us with a goddess for each card, and can help us dive into what needs to be seen, so that we can hopefully emerge with more clarity and connectedness. Let us see if this happens!

First up we have Lovers ~ Freya, striking a powerful pose and reminding us of the grace that comes with aligning our mind, body and spirit. Lovers, do you have anything you wish to share with us?

Lovers ~ Freya - Dark Goddess Tarot by Ellen Lorenzi-Prince

Yes, my darlings. Connect with the demons and dragons, for they are a part of us too. Connect with your fierceness and gentleness, for they are both worthy of attention. Connect with water and fire, as they will both expose the icky parts you need to discard (or learn to love) in order to feel at peace with the world. Connect with inner power so that you can face what comes next.

What comes next? Oh, Five of Earth (Pentacles) ~ Demeter

Five of Earth(Pentacles) ~ Demeter - Dark Goddess Tarot by Ellen Lorenzi-Prince

Yes, it’s me. Things may look like they are falling apart at times, and while I’m sure you have plenty of evidence that this could be truth, there are things currently unfolding behind the scenes to bring everything back together. Or everything that is meant to come back. Some things may be discarded, but the trick is to not get too lost in how you want it to be. Let things just be as they are for now, and work with that.

If the problem isn’t going anywhere, then your relationship with it will have to change if you are to continue contributing your wise voice to us all. And if you can’t find the wise voice? Then excavate until you find it. No short cuts. Take the hard road if necessary, but take it knowing that if you stay authentic in your willingness to come out of suffering, things can shift in a rather surprising way. And if it repeats, it will be different next time. Different in perhaps an easier way.

And I will help you understand the proper balance of things.

Hello Justice ~ Maat.

Justice ~ Maat - Dark Goddess Tarot by Ellen Lorenzi-Prince

Navigate the way forward with an open heart. Remember that having an open heart is never the problem – it’s your lack of boundaries that need to be worked on. Set your boundaries strongly, and move forward from there. I don’t want to repeatedly hear your sufferings from years ago, I want to feel the heart of your story. I want to hear the balance of your minds and hearts. Let the practical mind and the intuitive heart come together to keep you feeling more sane and self-knowing than you have for a long time.

Now come over to me, my pretties, and let me show you some more gifts that I have been collecting for you.

Seven of Earth (Pentacles) ~ Ereshkigal, you are appearing to us in a more confronting fashion than usual.

Seven of Earth (Pentacles) ~ Ereshkigal - Dark Goddess Tarot by Ellen Lorenzi-Prince

Pfff. You may fear me if you like, but there is no good in that. I have come to show you things that you may not want to look at. But look at them you must, if you want to release yourself from your current predicament. There is no journey in moaning repeatedly about the past. I would like to eat your moans and spit them into a black hole. But I think you would grow more if you ate them yourself, defecated them and flushed them down the toilet.

Hooeee you sure know how to get to the point Seven of Earth, don’t you?

Hullo Hanged One ~ Tiamat, do you have something to share?

Hanged One ~ Tiamat - Dark Goddess Tarot by Ellen Lorenzi-Prince

Uh. Yes! Oh. This is tiring. All this seeing and seeing and seeing. There is so much to see and a lot of it is making me sad. Yet a lot of it is quite fascinating too. Did you know that some people unknowingly run away from joy, in order to have a dramatic and stuck existence?

I have also been watching people who are having a hard time but are trying so hard to come unstuck from their current predicaments. People who are taking responsibility for themselves and aren’t just flinging blame around like it’s a bad smell. I like watching these warriors.

I want you all to be able to find the space every day to observe what is going on around you, and go quiet until you feel the stress leave you – even if it only leaves for a few breaths. From that space, you may start to notice what life is offering you. Perhaps it’s offering you a way forward that is laden with kindness. Kindness that will fuel you until you can take the best course of action once more.

Mmmm, yes, that is nice, Hanged One. Let me expand on what you said, in my own way.

Welcome, Two of Water (Cups) ~ Lorelei, please take this reading to a close.

Two of Water (Cups) ~ Lorelei - Dark Goddess Tarot by Ellen Lorenzi-Prince

Let me sing to your bones and cast your fears out to sea. Let me tell you tales that scare your poor jaded heart into seeing just how lucky you are. I will help you embrace beautiful options you have been avoiding. Why? Because you forgot that life isn’t about it all being nice and smooth. Embrace the seemingly shocking as well as the knowingly precious, and let me take you into a space where you feel committed to your own path of happiness and clarity once more.

Find the people that acknowledge your inner beauty, even if it’s merely someone you pass in the street. Know that something stronger must be awakening in you, for the universe is not unkind to those with a willingness to grow. In the spirit of Newton’s law of universal gravitation, may you begin to attract more love to you as you deal it out. Here is some from me to get you started: <3

Tarot Reading for the Collective ~ November 2015

Dear Collective,

Well it’s November and it’s been quite a year don’t you think? When we started the Year of the Goat I was like “Yay! Goats are cute and friendly!” And then I took a look at what was going on in the world around me, and I remembered that goats are very much into climbing vertical cliffs and balancing on inch-wide-rocks on the edge of precipices. Sometimes they fall but so often they just land, take a breath and keep on leaping upwards.

Does this remind you of your year? The “well, it’s kinda hard right now but I guess I’m gonna just keep on climbing that massive mountain”?

It appears to have been a year of wonderful, exciting and powerful things as well as hard, sad and stressful things. Therefore, I thought before we get to the final Tarot Reading for the Collective for the year, I should crack out the Tarot of the Crone by Ellen Lorenzi-Prince. Because, by golly, we need some help from the wise old ladies. So here we go dear readers, our month with the Tarot of the Crone.

First we meet with the Five of Swords, and are reminded of how sharp life can be and how careful we need to be at times of our own actions, and of the actions of others. Sometimes folk are not aware of how sharp they are being! Five of Swords, do you have something to add?

Five of Swords - Tarot of the Crone by Ellen Lorenzi-Prince

Always. Cut loose from that which you do not understand, in case you are unknowingly adding fuel to the fire. And if you can clearly see what is going on, and it vexes you, still move away, as there are sink holes in some situations that you would do best to avoid.

Grandmother of Disks (Queen of Pentacles), will you meet with us now?

Grandmother of Disks (Queen of Pentacles) - Tarot of the Crone by Ellen Lorenzi-Prince

Of course my children. Come take a seat, and let me remind you to be very careful that you never mistake your fantasies for reality. Sometimes fantasies feel so nice, and provide such warmth in amongst a cold and harsh environment… but they have the potential to drag you down into an unrelenting place of pain! I am speaking sternly because I want you to back away from the stories that lighten your heart for but a moment before they break you in two, for a much longer time.

I am here to keep you grounded, and warm your cockles with the wisdom that arises when you are able to see things just as they are, and have acceptance for that. Even if the current moment is not what you would like, it is still giving you something that you will later understand. It will be a part of your own gospel, not just of truth, but of experience.

Shall I continue in a similar vein?

Hermit - Tarot of the Crone by Ellen Lorenzi-Prince

Hermit? Please, if you will.

Well, my dears, you must know how to carry everything you need in order to stay strong, inside of yourself, at all times. Sometimes, no matter how much we think we might need someone to support us, no one will be there. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing – it can be a good opportunity to pull our heads out of our arses! And then when people do stand beside us once more, we are less likely to take them for granted. Don’t let the hard stuff get you down, I am showing you a way to be curious about it all. Stay curious! There is so much more to see that transcends your current situation.

And then look to me when you need to get clearer about what to hold on to and what to let go of.

Six of Disks (Pentacles) - Tarot of the Crone by Ellen Lorenzi-Prince

Hello Six of Disks (Pentacles). What would you most like us to hear from you today?

I want you to start experimenting with going through doorways that have triggered feelings of discomfort in the past. And not discomfort that means it’s all doom and gloom, rather, the discomfort that arises when you are about to obliterate an old and unnecessary part of your ego. From here you can start a continual process of receiving and letting go that allows you to stand clearer in your decision making.

And I will help you integrate what you discover with my friend the Six, so that you can see the bigger picture.

Seven of Disks (Pentacles) - Tarot of the Crone by Ellen Lorenzi-Prince

Welcome Seven of Disks (Pentacles), please take us on your journey!

Of course, my friends. It’s hard work riding with me, but the kind of hard work that will help you sleep well at night. I don’t show the shortcuts because right now you need paths that leave you feeling complete and full of purpose. You are all a part of a bigger plan here, and my tenacity will encourage you to step up to your choices with a more wholistic vision than you have previously allowed yourself.

And when you have a clearer understanding of the path ahead, you can more freely embrace my gifts.

Fool - Tarot of the Crone by Ellen Lorenzi-Prince

Fool, you have come.

Of course. It was time. Which of you are ready to allow life to be as expansive as it can be? Which of you are still stuck in your ditches, burying yourselves in deeper, all the while complaining about how no one is coming to liberate you? When I come, it is time to take a bold step into the unknown. Now is not a time to play games (intentionally or not) and get lost in distraction. It is a time to focus on what you would love to see happen in your world and see if you can take a step towards it. My appearance does not mean everything is going to suddenly be all fine and dandy. However, my presence does indicate that the tide is turning, and you can ride with me, or stand where you are. Your choice.

And just because you might need some light relief after all that, here I am communing with some baby goats at a friend’s farm in New Zealand, in August of this year. These goats were bought from a dairy farm, so they were saved from being killed and eaten, hooray! They chewed on my clothes and climbed on my head. It was a fantastic 5 minutes of goat therapy. Goats do take us into wild places, but they can also be playful, and lighten our hearts <3

Tarot Reading for the Collective ~ December 2015

Dear Collective,

Welcome to the final Tarot Reading for the Collective for 2015! For this reading I have chosen Los Arcanos del Tarot by Gloria Calderon. Gloria is from Venezuela and so the text is in Spanish. She hand-printed every card in this Majors-only tarot deck (so just 22 cards instead of the standard 78). I bought this deck from Mary Greer at this year’s Readers Studio in New York. I love that they are all woodcut prints, and I love the smell of this deck! I’m sorry that I can’t share the smell with you here on the blog, but trust me, it’s good (I was going to try and describe the smell to you, but I find I can’t. It’s a special wisdom reserved for the nose alone)!

First up we have Estrella (The Star) to bathe us in her distant yet powerful light before we catapult into the final stages of this calendar year. Estrella, what will you remind us of as we walk these final weeks of 2015?

The Star - Los 22 Arcanos del Tarot by Gloria Calderon

I will remind you to look after yourselves and keep yourselves safe. I come into your lives to heal what has fallen apart, so let me do just that. Be open to asking for and receiving help, and don’t reject my advances. Quiet time with me is not boring, it is powerful and it is necessary.

Thank you Estrella. I see now we have Death, and though the card is not named, the number is concurrent with Death and in the booklet it is referred to as ‘La Muerte’. So here we get to sit with the Death card a while, and remember what we have let go of this year. Death, do you care to speak?

Death - Los 22 Arcanos del Tarot by Gloria Calderon

My dear collective, you have let go of so much this year. Some of you have let go of old ideas and outdated dreams, some of you have lost your minds for a while and some of you have found them again, some of you have lost beings whom you love. I will help you let go every year, and indeed, every day, but as we walk these final weeks, perhaps remind yourself of the need to say goodbye to worn-out ways of behaving with others. Now is a good time to let go of what’s no longer nourishing you, and say yes instead to connections that feel vital and full.

Vital and full? I can help with that.

Sol (The Sun), thank you for shining upon us.

The Sun - Los 22 Arcanos del Tarot by Gloria Calderon

As always, it is a pleasure, O Collective. I am happy to be here and happy to remind you all of the need to expand into something bigger and more magnificent rather than just accept what the powers-that-be deem to be worthy of accepting.

If you haven’t done it already – do it now. Stand up and celebrate the body you are occupying and move forward in a direction that is agreeable to you. As long as you harm none, you are bound to find some sure and steady footing.

I think it’s now time we welcomed in the High Priestess, appearing to us as Pensamiento (this translates as ‘thought’ and the number indicates the High Priestess… one who goes within).

High Priestess - Los 22 Arcanos del Tarot by Gloria Calderon

Hello Collective Ones. I have much to dream of here, and much to prepare for. I have seen visions of what you can grow this coming year, and I want to remind you of the importance of staying close to your initial insights.

I know it is hard being human and it is even harder to trust your intuition. However, the more you open yourselves up to vibrant possibilities and the more you trust that initial pull that connects you to your hearts, well, there may be something especially beautiful to receive.

And I can up the tempo a bit so you can also have some extroverted as well as introverted time.

Magician - Los 22 Arcanos del Tarot by Gloria Calderon

Welcome, Art-Ficio (this translates as ‘Art-Fiction’ and the number indicates The Magician… the one who shows us the power of our talents)!

Welcome yourself, it is your life! Now, you’re probably going to feel bombarded as usual once you get to the New Year. So right now, I am going to show you this fancy trick where you just juggle ALL THESE FANTASTIC ASPECTS OF YOURSELVES and start to find that you are better at tackling big ideas than you initially thought.

So, what is this fancy trick?

Well, it’s hard to show in words alone. But part of it will just be having such love for certain parts of your journey, that you kind of WOW everyone with this showy blast of confidence, and whilst everyone is marvelling at your fabulousness, you just lie down and recollect yourself and then you burst forward again! It’s hard to explain, but a big part of it is just stubbornly believing you can do it. Choose your paths wisely though. There’s no joy in clinging to journeys that have forbidden access or are just off on a weird tangent.

And finally we have Dos Caminos (this translates as ‘Two- ways’ and the number indicates The Lovers).

Lovers - Los 22 Arcanos del Tarot by Gloria Calderon

Yes it is me, well, it is us. And we have an important message to share about compatibility and respect. End-of-year events can often bring stress, so it’s important that you allow us to show you how to negotiate respectful connections firstly with yourself, and then with others.

If you can align with what you most need for your own safety, peace-of-mind and joy, then you are more likely to be able to lead by example for others.

Remember to look out for the quiet moments as we take the last steps of the year – they deserve just as much attention as the noisy ones. And perhaps they will take you into a stronger internal space so that you can start the year with more self-love.

However you spend your days during this end-of-year season, I wish you warmth and love, dear readers. See you next year!

Tarot Reading for the Collective ~ January 2016

Welcome to the New Year, and to the first Tarot Reading for the Collective for 2016. This month I am using my newest deck, The Relative Tarot by Carrie Paris. This Majors-and-Court-cards-only deck uses beautiful vintage photographs with overlays of tarot symbols, and the card stock is lovely to feel (much like the olfactory experience of last month’s cards, this sensation is again, sadly one that I cannot share with you).

Being the New Year and all, I thought I’d do something slightly different with the Collective tarot reading this month. And I’m in the mood for a change. Usually it’s a 6-card-go-with-the-flow kind of a deal. This month I thought I’d use an ACTUAL SPREAD and ask ACTUAL QUESTIONS!

Let this reading be as focussed as we can get it, so we can get clear about our intentions for this month, and for the rest of the year. The questions that I will be asking are:

  1. What are we holding on to, that we need to release?
  1. What are we ignoring, that we need to embrace?
  1. What do we need to remember when we are feeling blocked?
  1. What do we need to work with, to stay on track and move forward into the year?

Let us begin!

What are we holding on to, that we need to release?

You can let go of me if you like. I don’t mind.

Page of Swords - The Relative Tarot by Carrie Paris

carrieparis.com

Page of Swords, please tell us more.

Well, I had a lot to say this past year. There was a lot going on, and there was a lot of misinformation. I needed to step in again and again, to open up the channels of communication in a way that was clear and bold.

However, I think the Collective needs a bit of a rest from trying to correct stuck situations for now. I think it may be time to leap in a new direction that is exciting, and different from what has unfolded before.

I believe the Collective needs to stop focussing on the past or on trying to make others who think differently agree with them. Forget about it! Step back from the frontline! Surrender what is unimportant and move in a direction that gives room for spacious thought rather than heady, endless, debate!

What are we ignoring, that we need to embrace?

Good heavens, you had better want to embrace me!

Judgement - The Relative Tarot by Carrie Paris

carrieparis.com

Judgement! Let us learn more about you.

Well, first of all, don’t mind what the naysayers think. I’m revelling in revelation too much to care what a conservative mind decrees. So best you don’t ignore me, I’ll help you dance off the stigma.

By embracing me you will have the chance to get clearer about where you want to place your boundaries, and what you want to learn. Do you want to discover enlightening things this year? Or do you want your only learning experience to be akin to diving dramatically into the nearest ditch and lying stuck in the mud, muttering about how so-and-so has done you so wrong?

Please say that you’ll take the enlightening option darling Collective! For myself I will dance no matter what you lot are doing, but it is so much more joyful to see you actually dance freely with me rather than swaying half-heartedly on the sidelines. Join me!

What do we need to remember when we are feeling blocked?

Haha! I’ll unblock you alright! I’ll blow your blockages apart!

The Tower - The Relative Tarot by Carrie Paris

carrieparis.com

Ooee The Tower! Do continue with your explosive machinations (metaphorically, if you please)!

It’s pretty straightforward really. If you are feeling stuck, you will become unstuck eventually. That’s how the world turns. Unless you are one of those humans that likes to ignore how the whole world is starting to turn in a particular direction… and you sit and sit in the blocked pipe… but I will get to even those beings eventually. Myself or death, or both! Preferably me first so you have a chance to live fully before the lights-out part.

Let me help you dismantle old belief systems – the ones that keep you thinking you are worthless and somehow not enough. Let me deconstruct the places in your mind that keep you at the mercy of the ‘experts’. Let me precisely reveal the patterns that draw you towards situations which are unsavoury and dangerous at worst, and downright boring at best.

Let me help you construct new ways thinking that will liberate you. Actually I won’t do that – it’s not really in my job description. But perhaps the next archetype will help with that? Here’s hoping.

What do we need to work with, to stay on track and move forward into the year?

Find a friend, hold them close, and keep moving.

The Lovers - The Relative Tarot by Carrie Paris

carrieparis.com

Welcome, The Lovers. Do continue.

Spin around and let me help you find a way of leaning into marvellous ideas that are so beautiful and soft you can scarcely believe they could possibly become something more than a whisper. Let me pierce you in such a way that you experience sensations so close to both pain and pleasure, that you decide it’s actually a fantastic thing to walk in your own courageous direction.

I’ll keep you on track by showing you the most vulnerable place in your heart. I’ll keep you moving forward by challenging you to proudly dance that vulnerability, knowing that what you have found is so pure, no one can actually harm you. Yes, they may try, as people do when they are heavy in the mind and heart, but true harm they shall not do. For this is your space to claim, and your dance to dance. Let your hearts lead the race, dear Collective (even when you’re tired).

Dearest Collective,

February’s Tarot Reading for the Collective comes to you courtesy of The David Bowie Tarot deck by Jessica DeFelice. That’s right, The David Bowie Tarot Deck. Some of you right now may be fainting with pleasurable disbelief, and others will be going “so what?”. But to the latter group I say, don’t worry, it’s still a Tarot Reading for the Collective, and hopefully there will be a message in there for you all.

I ordered this deck via a Kickstarter campaign last year. Now that David Bowie is sadly no longer with us, it was an extra special moment when this deck arrived to my home on Friday afternoon. Until that moment I had been wondering what deck I would use for this reading. The wondering stopped instantly upon opening the parcel!

So let us take a journey to the stars with David Bowie… [This reading was done while listening to Bowie songs (of course). In particular, to the album that I often listen to while riding my bicycle around town: The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders from Mars.]

I enjoyed thinking up questions for the Collective last month, so thought I’d keep with that flow. This month’s questions are:

  1. How we can gather the strength required to connect with our dreams?
  2. How do we recognise which opportunities are the most beneficial?
  3. What sits just out of sight, that we need to know about so that we can be better prepared?
  4. What archetype will be our dance partner for February, showing us how to spin out of any melancholia?

As usual, I’ll just let the cards speak to you directly once the question has been laid down.

How we can gather the strength required to connect with our dreams?

~The Wheel of Fortune

Wheel of Fortune - The David Bowie Tarot Deck by Jessica DeFelice.jpg

“He took it all too far, but boy could he play guitar”

Build and manifest, wait, build and manifest. Move, build and manifest. Don’t stop moving, but remember that sometimes your movements will be slow, so you will think you’re not getting anywhere. The rest point is an important part of the cycle. So is the climbing point, the rising point and the falling point.

You will be at all positions at some point, many times over, so stop getting caught up in where you ‘should’ be, and just be. Sing from a place so deep inside that your own ears don’t even understand what you are saying. But trust that your witnesses will respond in a way that causes you to react and then understand so much more about your deeper self, and your deepest dreams.

How do we recognise which opportunities are the most beneficial?

~ Seven of Wands

Seven of Wands - The David Bowie Tarot Deck by Jessica DeFelice.jpg

“Come out of the garden, baby
You’ll catch your death in the fog”

How do you think you recognise them? By connecting with the one that frightens you most! Or rather, the one that makes your heart leap forward – and then you feel this weird tugging sensation like a gremlin in your body trying to clutch at your leaping heart and wrap a cold, wet, grey blanket around it. Fight off the gremlin! Resist the status quo!

If you want to connect with beneficial opportunities no one is going to be able to spell it out for you. Be wowed by your capacity to resist the pressure of the grey wet blanket and grab that microphone and sing like it’s your hairbrush and you’re in front of the mirror in your bedroom.

What sits just out of sight, that we need to know about so that we can be better prepared?

~ Death [Haha!]. I’m tempted to just want to leave it there, but as this is a reading and I like to be helpful, I guess I will expand. Or rather, Death will expand:

Death - The David Bowie Tarot Deck by Jessica DeFelice.jpg

“Something happened on the day he died
Spirit rose a metre and stepped aside”

[NB. As I wrote this part I spoke it aloud at the same time, in a harsh, gravelly whisper. Also with an American accent. Doing this yourself might help you get into character.]

Take a drag on this baby: We’re all going down and we ain’t taking nothing with us. I’ll prepare you by taking away what you think you need most and PROVE to you that you didn’t really need it at all, in order to help you figure out this wacked-out-constantly-changing-ever-mysterious LIFE! I’ll try my best not to freak you out TOO much, but by my stars, baby, you’re gonna want to step out of that funk you’re in and just keep moving. You don’t need that old shit. You need something no one else can find for you. You need a path that honours your progress, and that reminds you that those who don’t honour you, cannot SEE you. So WHY try and help them by standing still? Help them by kicking arse and not apologising for your freaky goddamn BEAUTY!!

What archetype will be our dance partner for February, showing us how to spin out of any melancholia?

~ The Alien (Magician)

The Alien (Magician) - The David Bowie Tarot by Jessica DeFelice.jpg

“If we can sparkle he may land tonight”

Change your surroundings and speak to the moon when it’s new, speak to it when it’s full, I don’t care when, just speak to it! And speak to each other. And integrate what you’ve learned so far and stop throwing outdated ideologies at each other. Invite the alien within to come out and play. This will make you feel kind of strange but it will be good for you.

If you think you might be kind of conservative, drop that conservatism for a moment and see how it feels to be a bit looser. If you’re the opposite of conservative, well, maybe just try and ground that spaciousness somewhat, so that you can inspire others more. And if all still feels kind of stuck, and sort of blah, then rub some glitter on your temples and throw your head back to the sky and hurtle some love to the nearest star.

Tarot Reading for the Collective ~ March 2016

Dear readers, it’s time for the monthly Tarot Reading for the Collective, and it’s time to use the Dark Goddess Tarot by Ellen Lorenzi-Prince again. This is a powerful deck, and I think an extra bit of empowerment never goes astray. And so many clients have chosen to work with this deck this lately, out of the five decks I have on the tarot table. So the Dark Goddess Tarot it is: where every card is also a goddess, so it’s got double the power!

This month’s questions are:

  1. What are we hiding from ourselves?
  2. Who will take us into a clearer headspace?
  3. Who will help us confront the more thorny parts of ourselves?
  4. And who will help us embrace what we discover, so we are no longer fearful of who we are?

Like always, I’ll just let the cards speak to you directly once the question has been laid down.

1. What are we hiding from ourselves?

Six of Water (Cups) - Tefnut - Dark Goddess Tarot by Ellen Lorenzi-Prince

Six of Water (Cups) ~ Tefnut

My dears, you are so good at hiding your capacity for collaboration, for community action and for work without competitiveness. You do indeed know how to draw out the light in each other and be genuinely happy when another finds their stride, yet sometimes you forget this and trick yourself into being jealous.

You may be ignoring how you can be real and authentic for those around you who are struggling right now. You don’t have to be impatient with them, or force them to be ‘fixed’… you can sit with them and love them hugely, with the quiet hope that they will find their way through. Trust that they want to see you growing too. Your onward growth could be helping them restrengthen their relationship with life.

2. Who will take us into a clearer headspace?

Chariot - Ishtar - Dark Goddess Tarot by Ellen Lorenzi-Prince

Chariot ~ Ishtar

Come with me to boldly move forward, to cut forth and go deep. Ignore the distractions: they are not for you, they never were. If you must contemplate them, contemplate what they say about you and your own journey, rather than a projected fantasy.

Be resilient in your intentions and gather only the fuel you need for this next stage of life. Trust there will be another refuelling station before you run out of steam.

Know that if you trust in yourself, you will manifest the energy to hold people in that same strong space where they can be inspired to walk confidently on their own path.

3. Who will help us confront the more thorny parts of ourselves?

Liberation (Judgement) - Persephone - Dark Goddess Tarot by Ellen Lorenzi-Prince

Liberation (Judgment) ~ Persephone

I will help you enjoy the darker spaces you inhabit, where you learn more about the complexities and intrigues of the human condition. I will remind you that while you may fall short of your self-expectations at times, there is wisdom to be found in your transgressions.

Through embracing your thorny aspects you are being more real with yourself, and becoming more whole. There must be more to you than the cheerful exterior. Don’t let people get away with thinking you’re overly sweet: you are so much more than that.

Judge only what you want to shift within yourself rather than what you think others must change in themselves. And if you must gaze fiercely at yourself, try your best to bring kindness in as well. Take refuge in the peace of the darker waters: the unknown doesn’t have to frightening.

4. And who will help us embrace what we discover, so we are no longer fearful of who we are?

Witch of Fire (Queen of Wands) - Dark Goddess Tarot by Ellen Lorenzi-Prince

Witch of Fire (Queen of Wands) ~ Cerridwen

I will bring your power to the table and demand you add your freakiest aspects to the mix. Draw deep on your experiences thus far, and find a way to gain understanding about even the most noxious of experiences you have moved through.

I won’t ask you to forgive, but I will ask you to get clear and move to a space where no one else owns any part of you. You are wholly your own person, and your own experience is yours. Your wisdom is your own and only you can make the bigger calls of your life.

Let the wise ones add to the mix, but know that even they may use the trickster to guide you, whether knowingly or not. Be open and armoured all at once. Vulnerable and cool in one breath. Be mysterious, be active. Be your own flesh. Be your best friend and your most ferocious ally, and hold yourself well.

Tarot Reading for the Collective ~April 2016

Dear Readers, this month’s Tarot Reading for the Collective is brought to you by The Collective Tarot by the Tarot Collective. I am amused every time I write that sentence, and I have written it a few times now on this blog. This is a tarot deck created by a collective of artists from Portland, Oregon, and represents a large cross-section of society, so it is inclusive to anyone who chooses to work with this deck.

This month’s questions are:

  1. What changes can we expect this month?
  2. How can we grow beyond the tendency to make comparisons?
  3. How can we best face untruths?
  4. What can we learn from our own sufferings?

Like always, I’ll just let the cards speak to you directly once the question has been laid down.

1. What changes can we expect this month?

Intermission (Hanged Man/One)

Intermission (Hanged One) - The Collective Tarot by the Tarot Collective

Well, first you have to notice that I am here. You can expect me to give you ample opportunity to notice that something has ended, and something is beginning. Waiting to see who will come and save you will not work here. Only you can create the change that is needed. So what changes can we expect this month? Well, what do you want to see change? What issues are important to you? What is worth getting out of bed for and for what is worth staying alive another day? What can you ask for to help people understand how you are trying to make sense of this strange, mysterious cosmic soup? Where are you flailing? How can you ask people to step in with an inspirational or simply practical boost? How will you then move on once you have received that gracious assistance? Where can you nurture more love in your life when you are struggling to feel it in the current circumstances?

I hope you haven’t come to see me for answers! For I am here to help you observe and really notice what needs to be done in your lives. So listen and watch. And pay attention, for there are more of us now, and with every new life there is more energy manifesting and more opportunity for connection, and understanding what separates us. It is crucial that we are doing our best to hear and understand each other.

2. How can we grow beyond the tendency to make comparisons?

The Hermit

The Hermit - The Collective Tarot by the Tarot Collective

By letting me shine a light on your own sweet face. By letting me pierce your heart with a document full of the crazy beautiful movements you have been making for so long now. You still comparing yourself to others? You still think that other people are just cruising along with no troubles in their complex minds? The chemistry of the body is a fascinating thing and everyone finds themselves in a funk sometimes. The trick is to not allow the illusion of others skipping through the tulips to get you down when you are feeling meh and gut-wrenchingly existential.

There is beauty, too, in these strange shadows that we find ourselves moving through in slow-motion. And in those harsher moments there are nuggets of wisdom that will keep you shinier in the other moments. Those moments when you are actually able to see how powerfully your heart affects others.

3. How can we best face untruths?

The Sun

The Sun - The Collective Tarot by the Tarot Collective

Bask in the light, don’t get down, put on your play-suit and go forth into the fray. With a strut and with confidence, the distorted shenanigans of those not perceiving reality-as-it-is need not get you down. They are only harming themselves after all. Keep shining on them as the sun keeps shining on us: unrelenting and powerful. And then look forward for clearer paths where you actually don’t have to associate with those you find troubling, in order to make a living or be a part of a particular community. I will help you see how you can thrive without having to squash your integrity.

4. What can we learn from our own sufferings?

Seven of Feathers (Swords)

Seven of Feathers (Swords) - The Collective Tarot by the Tarot Collective

That we are creating our own pain. We pull ourselves apart and for those witnessing us they are confused. “But why can you not feel what I see in you?”. Beyond the desolation there is a triumph of sorts. That though we have eaten ourselves we have gained an understanding that we never need hide our pain again. We can share it in a way that facilitates understanding and compassion rather than separation and frustration. I will help you listen out for your sharp insights that pierce through even your most monumental downers. I will introduce you to people who pierce you in ways that bring ecstacy through the pain. Herein lies truth amongst the rubble. I will help you knit your brain back together while you are there. xx

Tarot Reading for the Collective ~ May 2016

This month’s Tarot Reading for the Collective is coming to you much later than usual due to reasons of holidaying! I started this reading in San Francisco, and here it ends in Sydney. Part of it was also written on the final stages of the plane home. It’s a Pacific Ocean reading!

The deck I am using is Pentimento Tarot by Joanna Powell Colbert. I acquired this deck at the Readers Studio in NYC and instantly fell in love. So in love with it that it featured in my wedding two weeks ago in the Redwood Regional Park in Oakland. We decided to take advantage of the marriage equality laws in California, and the wedding was one big walk-through tarot reading! There are a few photos of the ceremony on my Instagram page (it’s a public page, so you don’t have to be on Instagram to view).

This tarot deck is a Majors-only deck (a full deck is made up of 78 cards, and there are 22 cards in the Major Arcana) and features a beautiful and unique creative process where Joanna created the cards using beeswax collage.

So let us begin! This month’s (the final week of the month that is!) questions are:

  1. How can we hold onto what we know, so we can remember who we are?
  1. How can we maintain the right momentum, so everything can get done at the right time and place?
  1. How can we speak to our past, so that we are no longer burdened by the weight of what was done?
  1. How can we challenge ourselves to stay firm in our stance, so that we walk strongly with our current dreams, as we whisper to our future ones?

As usual I will let the cards speak directly to you.

1. How can we hold onto what we know, so we can remember who we are?

The Tower

The Tower - Pentimento Tarot by Joanna Powell Colbert.jpg

Ha! I know some of you are confused by my appearance: “How can an exploding tower possibly help us hold onto anything?” I’m also sure some of you are nodding knowingly in amusement… I often make an appearance when people are wanting something more stable in nature!

How shall the Collective hold onto what they know so they can remember who they are? By surrendering to something more important than that which they consider most important. By letting go of the thoughts that disturb your innate capacity for calm, and by focusing on the spaces that hold connection.

You don’t have to explode along with me, but you might want to quickly ascertain where the nearest exit is so you can head that way as you realise what is important to you. That way you can naturally release the thoughts and people who don’t have the verve to connect with your heart.

Things aren’t always as they seem. They can be better, more aligned and clearer. But we haven’t been taught that, so it can feel kind of crunchy when we first meet this aspect.

2. How can we maintain the right momentum, so everything can get done at the right time and place?

Temperance

Temperance - Pentimento Tarot by Joanna Powell Colbert.jpg

Be mysterious, even with yourself. Let the flow ease back and forth and let life guide you, rather than trying to steer yourself by fragments and broken dreams, bits and pieces of this and that.

Trust in a flow that is warmer than your heart, and that stretches back further than your great grandparents’ great grandparents. The sooner you stop trying to figure things out by intellectualizing alone, the sooner you can be comfortable with the mystery, and just let the flow of Temperance push you where you need to be in every moment.

3. How can we speak to our past, so that we are no longer burdened by the weight of what was done?

The Fool

The Fool - Pentimento Tarot by Joanna Powell Colbert.jpg

With a certain amount of amnesia. I haven’t fully forgotten, I’ve just realised that I get more done when I stop being sentimental or overly fixated on the titles I used to give myself: thief, liar, idiot, cheater, time-waster, clown.

There is magic in our past, even in the messiest chunks. The potential for wisdom to spring forth was planted in every action or non-action of the past, and the chance to create a different way of existing always remains.

By taking a heartfelt leap with the Fool, you can understand that there was wisdom in even your most seemingly deluded moments.

4. How can we challenge ourselves to stay firm in our stance, so that we walk strongly with our current dreams, as we whisper to our future ones?

The Magician

The Magician - Pentimento Tarot by Joanna Powell Colbert.jpg

Take it from me, the road ahead has twists and turns that will make the fearful shake in their boots. For those who are willing to be real, be strong, and just face the ever-changing tides with the wisdom that IT ALL CHANGES, the warmth in your belly will grow as you connect more with your bodily dreams.

You will need to uncover rituals of the past and remember what it is that you laid rest to. Not because you need to excavate, but so you know what to reject when the charismatic ones try to impress their ideas upon you.

I will help you stay firm in your stance but deny you access to superficial fodder. I will help you walk strongly with your current dreams by reminding you of your wisdom and skills as you wake up every morning. I will help you whisper to your future dreams by pressing more love into your hearts by whatever means possible.

Whether it comes from a stranger’s smile or quiet moments with a loved one, I am pushing strength into you so that you awaken into what you are meant to do, if any of us are to leave this life with an understanding of connection and truth.

Tarot Reading for the Collective ~ June 2016

Welcome to June, and welcome to The Elora Tarot Project, a tarot deck that came into the world when Shelley Carter from Elora, Ontario, Canada, invited 65 local artists to create the 78 tarot card images. Shelley is quoted on the inside of the tarot box, “There was magic at work when this community got together and created something extraordinary”.

I met Shelley at the Readers Studio in NYC this year when she came to the incubator session I led on the final morning. She sat next to me, and shared her wisdom with all at the table, and then gifted me with this deck at the end, hooray! I then gave her some of my Queen of Cups Chai. We were both pleased with our gifts.

So, on to the reading! We’re going into Solstice Season – Winter where I and my fellow antipodeans are, and Summer where some of you are, like the good folk of Elora, for example. June 21 is the Solstice and my goodness is it a good opportunity for setting clear intentions. What we initiate at this time of year can last and last. So perhaps let us ask questions that can keep us on track. This month’s questions are:

  1. How can we ask good questions? [I actually want to know]
  2. How will we know when we’ve asked a good question? [Yes! How?!]
  3. How can our communities help us set our personal intentions? [Please help!]
  4. What can happen if we pull our finger out and just make a decision and by golly put it into action? [I REALLY want to know this!]

As usual I will let the cards speak directly to you.

  1. How can we ask good questions?

      The Chariot.

Just look forward and face what beckons you. Open your heart as you gaze upon the path ahead and see what you have never been able to see before. Give a voice to questions that erupt from overwhelming curiosity. The kinds of questions that could shock people with their rawness.

Psychic Sarah herself had the experience of asking a mortician whether they had ever commenced an embalming process only to find that the person wasn’t actually dead. She had been wondering about this for some time, and finally had the opportunity to ask at a talk given at a local funeral home as part of “Under the Blue Moon”, a Gothic festival in Newtown. The crowd responded to her question by collectively gasping in shock and turning around to look at the weirdo who could possibly ask such a thing. The crowd then gasped again when the embalmer answered in the affirmative (just the once, that he’d heard of. In New Zealand. Tricky situation. I mean, even though they weren’t dead per se, they were mostly dead. Who was to blame? The embalmer for not checking? The doctor for not double-checking?!)

So, it could be a question like this – one that satisfies a strange and perhaps morbid curiosity, or rather, one that beckons people to gaze into your heart by making a connection with their own. Both types of question can provide such stimulating answers. The second kind, especially so. I am aware I haven’t given you an example of the second kind. However, I think that is best, as you really need to make the time to sit with yourself, with few distractions, in order to uncover these curiosities. Now go forth and leave me to the night sky.

  1. How will we know when we’ve asked a good question?

Death.

Haha! Oh goodness me. Hmm. Has anyone else noticed how often Death and The Tower have been turning up in this year’s Tarot Readings for the Collective? And in a way that makes us seem like a punchline? Anyone laughing yet?!

You have to admit, as a concept, I’m about as mysterious as you can get, right? Who knows me so well that they can confidently talk about me as if they are the absolute knowledge bearer on this subject? No one, that’s who! Well, some people DO do that, but they’re just hypothesising, or just talking about their own experience, which certainly isn’t everyone’s reality. They won’t really know me until their bones fall apart. And then they’ll be dead and the rest of you can just keep on wondering.

So how can I help you know when you’ve asked a good question? You will feel like you’ve just been introduced to a part of your heart that you didn’t even know existed until that moment. KaPOW and WHOOSH you’ll feel so open that you will feel like asking a selected few to gaze inside of you and respond to your question with a sense of wonder and pleasure.

Of course, if you’re that open, the selected few could damage you! They could ignore you! They could ridicule you! You might feel like all of this is very possible! But perhaps they might gasp, hand over heart, as their heart explodes open too, and they feel so honoured to be asked something they have never before been asked. And chances are they will do just that. And if they don’t, and opt for the former, meaner way of responding, then it DOESN’T MATTER! Because your heart is open! You can answer it yourself! You can fling your question to the universe with a leap and a kick (metaphorically or literally, as you wish) and invite your wisdom to just POUR ON IN!

  1. How can our communities help us set our personal intentions?

Knight of Wands.

I, the Knight of Wands, as the representative of your community, light the fires in your heart. We light the fires in your soul. We watch you from a distance a lot of the time, but watch you we do. We are interested in you and in ourselves. What serves you will serve us. What you learn, we learn. We want you to be successful, because then we get to move forward. We get to embrace our dreams too. If you can set a clear intention, so can we. If you can do something unthinkably kind, we can ponder how we can do that too.

We will help you set your intentions by inviting you to gaze upon us, your community. What inspires you there? What psychedelic, hypercolour visions start to form in your brain as you ponder what your next step could be?

As the Knight of Wands I can help you look at ideas that you think are too big, and nudge you (with my FLAMING ROD!) towards the possible outcomes. Your communities will help you set your personal intentions by showing you what they have done, and admiring you (openly or subtly) and your ways of being so that you stop just STANDING there and get on with your part of the inspiration cycle.

  1. What can happen if we pull our finger out and just make a decision and by golly put it into action?

Queen of Swords.

Look at me my darlings! I move so fast you can’t see my shape. Things can change in one short moment. Sometimes for the worse, but also for the better. You could shape with your very own mouth the words that contribute to overturning the ever-growing pile of bullshit on this planet.

How could you speak to an authority figure in a way that helps them to connect with what is beautiful in their heart? There are no perfectly formed decisions, but with wit and grace there is always a way to navigate how the road turns and reforms in response to your decisions. Be clever and listen not just to your logical mind, but your fabulously organic and ever-growing heart. Your heart grows older every day. There is no time to waste!

If I was the type to weep, I would weep at your brave efforts of trying to connect with this world. It’s not like any of you have a script to follow or an actual clue as to what this life cycle is all about. Well, you do have clues, but clues are all you’ve got. How wonderful that you ponder changing your routines and figuring out new ways of exploring the map despite all the disruptions that occur.

I commend you for your efforts! And I wish you well as you pull your fingers out! Find your fellow bullshit blasters and be amazed at what you can create through inspiring the irresistable wildness in each other!

A Tarot Reading for the Collective for my Queer Community, post Orlando

$

0

Today I got an email from a member of my community, asking if I might do a special Tarot Reading for the Collective in the aftermath of the Orlando shooting. I know a lot of us are in pain right now, and I am so up for doing this, and so here it is.

This is a Tarot Reading for the Collective for the queer community. For my queer community in the Inner West of Sydney, and the queer community of the world. I welcome anyone to read this, no matter your identity. But right now, I focus my gaze on the queer community, with all the love. This love is for you.

The Orlando massacre was a hate crime towards queers. It was a crime that took place in a gay club. This was a place where people who frequently suffer discrimination in overt and covert ways, gather together to dance and socialise without fear of being ‘othered’ or bashed or stared at in an aggressive or inappropriate way. The perpetrator, as it is now being revealed, was a regular at the club. It’s tragic that someone can suffer so much self-hatred due to their unresolved issues caused by internalised homophobia.

On Sunday night I was at a gay club. Pink Bubble at the Red Rattler in Marrickville, Sydney. I danced with my amazing wife, and embraced friends who we hadn’t seen since we eloped in California. Celebrating love is something my community loves to do. I was wearing a dress with oversized multi-coloured sequins attached, and crazy makeup (green lipstick with ‘joker’ edges, green glitter under my eyes and a big green heart painted over my third eye with pink rays coming off it). This getup was not seen as weird or wrong by my fellow party goers, it was appreciated and enjoyed.

In this Queer community space, people can dance however they like, with whomever they fancy, wear what they feel overwhelmingly drawn to wear, and be celebrated rather than ridiculed. If we want to go over-the-top, there won’t be people griping at us to ‘tone down’. Self-expression is safe here, as long as your expression doesn’t harm yourself or other people. Love and acceptance is the key.

At Pink Bubble there were all manner of fabulous people in all manner of fabulous outfits. There was an extraordinarily powerful show about climate change by the ever-talented Justin Shoulder, and we danced, and there was love. I had a really good dance and reveled in the strength and joy present in my community.

As I danced in my pink bubble on a dance floor in Marrickville Sydney, the lives of my queer sisters and brothers on another dance floor, were being extinguished. Our dance floor was covered in spilled beer, theirs was covered in blood. When I went home in the early hours, I discovered that 49 queer sisters and brothers had been killed while they danced in what was SUPPOSED to be their safe space. The place they can go to to let their guard down and not having to have the thought in their head as they lean towards their lover, “is it safe, to hold you here?”

I can’t imagine the horror of someone coming into my local gay bar and slaughtering us all as we dance. But now this possibility haunts me. This was a LGBTIQ hate crime and to suggest otherwise is to perpetuate the same bullshit that my community has been battling for far too many years.

So for this reading I am using The Collective Tarot by the Tarot Collective. The Tarot Collective are a community of queer artists in Portland Oregon, who created a deck that moved beyond the usual caucasian/cisgendered/heternormative narrative and gave us a deck where the queer community could see their own faces, without having to gloss over the details of the imagery.

The questions I am asking for this reading are:

  1. What the f*ck just happened?
  2. How can we possibly begin to heal from this, and dance together without the fear that it could happen to us, at any time?
  3. What message do we need to get out to the wider world, to help them wake up and stop throwing their hatred at us?
  4. What does a queer revolution look like?
  5. What can the Queer Community of Sydney do?

As is the case for my Tarot Readings for the Collective, I will let the cards speak to you directly.

  1. What the f*ck just happened?

Mentor of Feathers (King of Swords).

Mentor of Feathers - The Collective Tarot by the Tarot Collective.jpg

Shit just got real, and I can no longer be ignored. I have been crying for some time, telling the world what I see, but they were too busy listening to themselves go blah blah blah. I am here to shake things up. I will do everything I can do to protect you from more hate. But my goodness there are so many walking the planet with glue in their ears. Don’t hold back from talking about what must be spoken of. I will help you wear down those afraid to hear your beautiful hearts. What happened was not meant to happen, but now that it has, there will be actions that can lead to peace. I immensely dislike that it will left to you to climb that mountain and maintain the focus. But you will get clearer in your mind and heart with every step.

  1. How can we possibly begin to heal from this, and dance together without the fear that it could happen to us, at any time?

Oppression (The Devil).

Oppression - The Collective Tarot by the Tarot Collective.jpg

Oh, my darlings, I’m not sure if I can remove that fear from you. Your fear is real, and now you know this. You may feel like you are rolling a rock uphill, but I will show you how to move beyond oppression. Your resilience has always astounded those who have tried (and continue to try) to silence you. So how will I help you heal? I will help you get up every day. I will guide you through the moments of doubt and despair by helping you trust in your ability to inspire others through your creative actions. I will work with you for a change, not against you, and will give you the nudge you need to keep going when the fear strikes again, in an unsuspecting moment.

What you face is huge, but your love has always impressed me so much. Sometimes my role is to try and keep you in the rut, so that you stop being so goddamn beautiful and shining your enlightening perspectives on the world. But your love, it grows so hugely every day, and I am weary of tearing you down. You may find me in brief moments trying to cut you down, but for the most part I will support you in your efforts to exist as openly as you can. It is you that is teaching the world how to love.

  1. What message do we need to get out to the wider world, to help them wake up and stop throwing their hatred at us?

Two of Bones (Two of Pentacles).

Two of Bones - The Collective Tarot by the Tarot Collective.jpg

Throw them a bone! Throw them a clue! Wind yourselves together and face the storm! Draw on the strength of your queer ancestors, the ones that have been lost to the burning times, to colonisation, to AIDS, to violence, ignorance, and invisibility. Those that died in the streets through neglect, wind yourself around their short lives and their memories. Envision your glorious future as a queer person in this crazy world and speak it to the night and to the day. Speak it to each other and speak it to your hearts.

You talk about things that people prefer to ignore. With the power of me – two snakes and a wishbone with wings – there is no limit to your presence and to your totally fierce and kickass nature. Share your complexities, make sure no one voice dominates the rest. There is no one leader, you are all leaders. All your fights are worth fighting for, and all of them are worthy of attention. Rise above the fake show of politicians and drive your clear message directly into the hearts of the masses. What is this message? It will be different for you all, but one thing all your messages have in common is unreserved clarity. You are guiding people out of their apathy. Be unrelenting in this. Your community will hold you when you need them for more strength. Ask for this if you need to.

  1. What does a queer revolution look like?

Intermission (The Hanged Man).

Intermission - The Collective Tarot by the Tarot Collective.jpg

It looks like the most amazing magic show this world has ever seen. It takes place centre stage but more so on the edges and in between things. It takes place in your homes and on the streets, on the trains, buses and bicycles. It takes place when you stand defiantly in your fabulousness and force people to get a grip. It looks like what you already do every day, times a thousand. It looks like shooting stars rippling across the skies, pulling the moon down to earth so we can kiss its face before turning the world upside down.

It looks like the inspiration the young queers need to keep living, and what the old queers need to reverse the jaded states that come with years of battle. It looks like the most beautiful, sparkly, eccentric, joyous thing I have ever seen. There is no blood shed here, only tears of joy as you find each other and pump even more love into the spaces where people forgot what it was to be human. You may appear to be in bondage, but you are poised to break the chains in a most spectacular fashion!

  1. What can the Queer Community of Sydney do?

Seven of Feathers (Seven of Swords) & The Magician [one card didn’t feel like enough!]

Seven of Feathers and The Magician - The Collective Tarot by the Tarot Collective.jpg

The Seven of Feathers says,

Ignore those that try and tear us apart, they are in pain and know not how to make peace with their confusion. Give no space to those that try and infect your consciousness with lies.

The Magician says,

Wake up to your guiding power. The Sydney queer community is rare jewel in a bizarre world. Don’t let your differences get in the way of your need to shower the world with powerful, raw, sublime honesty. Use your unique skills to empower those around you.

Know that your marvelously eccentric and outlandish ways of existing in this world are your superpowers. You aren’t here to make everyone like you, rather you can help everyone be their true selves. Your colourful and creative lives can blow people’s minds and push them out of their comfort zones. You can live your art. You are artists, no matter how you express this. Art will save you as it can speak to what must be addressed if we are to truly live. Be unrelenting with this. I want to watch you be the superheroes this world is waiting for.

Tarot Reading for the Collective ~ July 2016

Dear readers, welcome to this month’s Tarot Reading for the Collective, and welcome to the Tarot de St. Croix by Lisa de St. Croix. I had had my eye on this beautiful contemporary multi-cultural tarot deck for quite some time, and it was on my To-Buy list when I went to Readers Studio in NYC this year. The Tarot Garden had one left in stock, and buy it I did, hooray!

The questions for July are:

  1. Who are we listening to?
  2. Who should we listen to more?
  3. Who will hold us accountable?
  4. How can we love each other well, and without judgment?

As usual, I will let the cards speak to you directly.

  1. Who are we listening to?

Two of Pentacles

Two of Pentacles - Tarot de St. Croix by Lisa de St. Croix

To listen to me is to know the need to maintain balance in trying times. So many things are being thrown at the Collective that are aimed to disturb you and distract you from what your hearts yearn for. I am helping you to keep your feet on the ground and to remember why you chose this way of living in the first place.

If you aren’t sure if you have made choices that are beneficial at this point, let me weave your head and your heart closer together. Then you might stop confusing one for the other. Let both your head and your heart speak to you in equal measures, with the intention of helping you be at once practical and magical in your decision-making processes.

If you are content with your choices, then keep striving and stay strong in your core, and if there is ruckus ahead, it will be nothing you can’t handle.

It is important to consider, however, that you are listening to me because you expect there to be some sort of struggle. Perhaps the Collective is listening to me so intently because I hold a tension of power that is familiar yet unyielding. Do you wish to listen to a different story?

  1. Who should we listen to more?

Three of Wands

Three of Wands - Tarot de St. Croix by Lisa de St. Croix

Listen to me to help your mind escape the boundaries placed by the status quo. Listen to me more to keep you growing beyond the old, worn out, seemingly-true-but-not-really-true-statements like “that’s just the way things are”/”sometimes you’ve got to do things you don’t want to do”/”I’ve got no choice”.

Take a breath with me and consider other options. Perhaps some of them aren’t quite ripe enough to connect with just yet, but by holding them in your mind and heart you allow them to grow beyond the idea stage and into reality.

Invite in new thoughts that are welcoming to your heart. Be curious about where the mere act of considering these options will take you. Set up boundaries that protect you from unnecessary criticisms and made-up fears.

  1. Who will hold us accountable?

Eight of Swords

Eight of Swords - Tarot de St. Croix by Lisa de St. Croix

Hehe. I will hold you accountable by reminding you of your superstitions just enough to keep you in line, but leaving you free enough to find a more ethical way forward.

Seek out the places where you lose track of your moral judgment and stay there until you can feel your intuition finding you again.

Having me hold you all accountable means you must pay attention to the moments when you just want to forget what your intuition is saying and fall off your path. I will keep you on track and I will make you pay attention. You cannot relax and fall into an apathetic stupor with me on your case. Take a rest by all means, but recognise that the rest allows you to step with more certainty and piercing insight. Walk carefully and walk properly, but above all, keep walking.

  1. How can we love each other well, and without judgment?

Nine of Wands

Nine of Wands - Tarot de St. Croix by Lisa de St. Croix

You must be willing to walk away from your carefully constructed and heavily guarded opinions. You must be ready to enter a space where nobody knows you. If I can help you love each other well and without judgment, then you will notice a certain freedom when faced by people who think differently to you.

Instead of fear, you may notice compassion arise. This does not mean you have to lose sight of your own value system, but you may hold the creative notion that there is a way forward together.

Loving each other without judgment requires self-knowledge, and the best way to do that is to get to know your own inner mystery. You won’t find this knowledge in noisy debates, you will find it when you sit down with your own mind and heart. Be patient with the rate at which you grow. There are no contests here, only checking points.

Keep checking in though, with yourself and with those you love, so that collectively you can all learn how to support each other simply by opening your hearts. There are powerful places to reach when you are willing to converse with wisdom, so jolly well get to it. If you find yourself alone at any point, you don’t have to stop and wait for others. Slow and steady is best. See you on the path, my dears.

Tarot Reading for the Collective ~ August 2016

Dearest Readers,

This month we are talking with the Tarot of the Crone, by Ellen Lorenzi-Prince.

Of all the decks I have by Ellen (I have four), this one pulls at my inner world the most. All her tarot decks are powerful in their own way, and I bow deeply before each of them. This one is not for the fainthearted. Though, if you come for a reading with me and want to work deeply with the Tarot of the Crone, please request that we use it, and I will certainly lay it on the table for you. Just know that it won’t be all pretty and nice. It exposes what we need to see within ourselves and asks us to pay attention. It won’t just be there on the table as an option for you to choose from. This kind of deck needs to be specifically requested.

A note about this deck: when tarot card creators change the names of the court cards from the usual Page, Knight, Queen and King, the usual way of working is to think about what the new name corresponds to. For instance, if I came across Princess, I would think ‘oh, that’s the Page’, and if I came across Mother, I would think ‘that’s the Queen’. However, with Ellen Lorenzi-Prince’s decks – from her Dark Goddess Tarot that I use regularly for clients, to this deck, Tarot of the Crone – I find I cannot change their names. In the Dark Goddess Tarot the Hag is not really the King, it is the Hag. The Amazon is not the Page, it is the Amazon. In Tarot of the Crone, the Shadow is the Shadow, the Grandmother is the Grandmother, the Witch is the Witch and the Beast is the Beast. They inhabit their own system, and I have no desire to try and associate them with something they are not.

So let us begin. The questions for this month are:

  1. What do we need to speak of more?
  2. What do we need to speak of less?
  3. Who can we turn to when our hearts are heavy?
  4. Who will bring us home to ourselves?

1. What do we need to speak of more?

Shadow of Disks

Shadow of Disks - Tarot of the Crone by Ellen Lorenzi-Prince

We need to speak to the unspoken things, the things we want to ignore. The things that make us uncomfortable, guilty and unstable. The things that remind us of our privilege, the things that have stunted our spiritual growth.

We need to talk to the uncomfortable aspects of our personal history, our family history, our communities’ histories and our nations’ histories. We need to be willing to acknowledge the pain we have caused through oppression and continue to cause through suppression. We need to speak of options that don’t require the suffering and degradation of others. We need to speak up about the lies that we have been fed about those who are apparently so different from us. Every time a group is ‘othered’ let it be known that that those who are ‘othering’ are fumbling to cover up their own horrendous actions.

Don’t look away from me. Look into me. And trust that in the wilderness of your own minds you can find clarity when you disconnect from the freshly laundered crap.

2. What do we need to speak of less?

Tower

Tower - Tarot of the Crone by Ellen Lorenzi-Prince

Speak less of me! Speak less of impending doom, of destruction to our planet by certain individuals! Do not give them your energy, positive or negative. Look to your own communities and focus on what you can build, rather than who or what you can destroy. Focus on connection. Stop expecting me to show up! Give me a renewed way of existing for you! Let me help you land on your paths with more kindness. But because you don’t yet know how to address my perception-shifting capabilities, go away! Stop seeking me out with your doomsday predictions, you don’t know what you’re asking for and I do not want to answer your self-destructive calls!

3. Who can we turn to when our hearts are heavy?

Witch of Disks

Witch of Disks - Tarot of the Crone by Ellen Lorenzi-Prince

Call me in, my people, let me lift you out of your confusion. There are those who want to keep you weak, but they are not your rulers. They cannot even rule their own minds. Gaze into my eyes and feel my heart bleed into yours. Let me awaken the warrior within, and remind you that a true warrior listens first to their own heart. Then they listen to the space around them. Then they move forward with a piercing gaze, ready to face whatever may occur. I am not here to tell you what to do or tell you what life is all about. You do not need hand-holding, mollycoddling, charismatic leaders, or structured belief systems in order to navigate this world. Let me remind you of your life before you became jaded. Let me help you move forward from that fresh space, but with the fierce determination of one who has suffered again and again but just won’t give up. Let me help you find a more empowering path.

4. Who will bring us home to ourselves?

Seven of Cups

Seven of Cups - Tarot of the Crone by Ellen Lorenzi-Prince

I will bring you home to yourselves!  I will wrap you up and place a protective layer around your dreams to make sure you don’t let the dream-eaters in. The Witch of Disks said you don’t need mollycoddling and I certainly won’t do that, but I will cut you a break, give you a breather, refresh your mind with some old wisdom you once knew but forgot due to all the busyness.

I will help you come home by reintroducing you to the parts of yourself you gave away to all the people who harmed you and affected your self-resilience. By feeling the support I offer through kind words or glances from strangers and from those you know, and of course from your own ever-growing self love (try it! It’s worth the effort!), you will feel your mind and your heart strongly grounded in your body.

From there, there is so much you can work towards. You won’t need answers, as you will be holding the mystery of it all with your heart, and reveling in the permission to just grow and feel your way forward for powerful and beautiful lessons. Go well, my dears.

Tarot Reading for the Collective ~ September 2016

Dear Readers,

This month I am in the mood for a deck that challenges the ways our eyes are used to looking at tarot imagery. I have chosen The Orbifold Tarot by Michael Bridge-Dickson, and I love the beautiful, shiny, colourful, geometric shapes contained therein. On the inside of the box containing this tarot deck are the words, ‘Explore the chaotic patterns & rhythms of life’s endlessly changing cycles.’ Yes. Let us.

This month’s questions are:

  1. What calls to our solitary heart?
  2. What calls to our community’s heart?
  3. What calls to our global heart?
  4. What will keep us wise?

1. What calls to our solitary heart?

The Tower

The Tower - The Orbifold Tarot by Michael Bridge-Dickson

Again? The Tower has been showing up so much this year! It was Card of the Month in February, and turned up for the Tarot Readings for the Collective in January, May, August, and now September!

Clearly you haven’t figured out what to do with me yet. You won’t just let me retreat to the back of the tarot deck. If I am calling to your solitary heart, consider what that might mean. And consider my shape, as I look somewhat different to my usual depiction of a tower struck by lightning.

Something is building in your heart, and is asking you to pay attention. Something that you’ve been mulling over for some time, something that requires a response from you, an action of some kind. Around and around the thoughts go, sometimes strongly, sometimes quietly, but there they roll nonetheless. And you usually find a way to push them away for whatever reason.

Well, I’m calling to say, stop rolling and start acting! All this rolling will eventually erode you, and when you are eroded you are weakened and more easily overwhelmed by external forces. Listen to my call, and start to move in the direction that your own wise heart knows you must. No one wants to witness a self-implosion.

2. What calls to our community’s heart?

The Wheel (also known as the Wheel of Fortune)

The Wheel - The Orbifold Tarot by Michael Bridge-Dickson

Your communal heart is more aligned than you give it credit for. Yes, you often find yourselves at different stages of the wheel, but that is where your strengths lie.

In a healthy community, you will all be dealing with life in varying ways at the same time. Your life experiences will be full of diverse wisdom, and instead of clashing with each other for thinking and acting differently, you can absorb this vast spectrum of knowledge and learn from the lessons you are walking through, together.

By observing each other with kind eyes and ready ears, your hearts can soften and you can move together in a way that defies control from any outside source. I, The Wheel, am calling to your community’s heart so you can be at peace with the flow of things, and so you can be curious about what lessons you hold for each other.

3. What calls to our global heart?

Four Earth

Four Earth - The Orbifold Tarot by Michael Bridge-Dickson

When writing down the cards that turned up for each question, I wrote this one down as ‘4 Earth’. Looking at it next to the question, it looked to me like wet-cement-graffiti of a couple of lovers’ names: ‘Heart 4 Earth’.

Of course. The Earth wants your heart. I am calling to the global heart of the Collective, by reminding you to stay present to cohesion. Find your way to the global heart via introspection and care. Dance with me in structured way, but be prepared for surprises. Watch for the openings, where you will be required to take centre stage and show your stuff. Trust that when it is time, it is better you turn up, rather than retreat, even if your anxieties and fears threaten your focus.

If I am to call to your global heart, I am asking you to lay down plans that are straightforward and accessible. I am asking you to connect with each other and find common ground rather than separating off into camps. Take separate space, certainly, for the purpose of healing, but then seek commonality once more. Is there something that joins your lives together? I am asking you to consider that each of you belong to each other’s story in some way, and you are going to have to get clearer about why you might react to others, whether positively or negatively. It is the responsibility of those in more privileged positions to work cohesively within themselves and pick up the slack.

Staying together is important. Boundaries are vital of course, and if you find it personally hard to let someone in, no need. But make sure that at the boundary where you end and they begin, there is no animosity.

4. What will keep us wise?

Page Air

Page Air - The Orbifold Tarot by Michael Bridge-Dickson

It’s so simple really. Your wholeness keeps you wise. When you try and separate off and compartmentalize your different ways of being, things get so confusing. You need to use your heart as much as you use your mind, and you certainly cannot ignore your spiritual needs. By spiritual I mean your need to sit quietly, and act from clear and peaceful realisations that heal rather than harm. Belief systems aren’t necessary for this, only ethics. Practice brave actions that cultivate ethical ways of connecting with the world around you, rather than relying on dogma that may no longer have true and peaceable value in today’s world.

Open the communication channels so that you take on only the lessons that you are truly meant to: no over-committing or under-committing. Find the balance by choosing to simplify. Get rid of the circus and invite in the bare bones. You can connect with the circus if you wish, but dig deeper to see where it first was born into this world, so that you can trust in the authenticity of what you seek to become.

Tarot Reading for the Collective ~ October 2016

I was going to work with a different deck of cards for this month’s Collective Reading, but I couldn’t start the process, and I began to think that perhaps this wasn’t the right month for that particular deck after all. So I went about my day-to-day business, wondering which tarot cards wanted to speak to the Collective in October. Meanwhile, the Kali Tarot Prayer Cards by Ellen Lorenzi-Prince kept on looking at me. I kept placing my hands on them again and again, until finally I thought, ‘Fine! Let us unleash the potent intensity and awesome fire of Kali, Goddess of Time, Creation, Destruction, and Power, for the Collective! Perhaps we need it.’

And so here we are, with the compelling Kali Tarot Prayer Cards. I have been in the habit this year of asking the cards questions for these readings, but who am I to ask questions of Kali? She will talk directly to us instead. Perhaps she will ask us some questions, or just bowl us right over, who knows?

Let us begin!

x-time-wheel-of-fortune-kali-tarot-prayer-cards-by-ellen-lorenzi-prince

I am Kali, mother of time, you may recognise my number (X) as the Wheel of Fortune

I will eat you if you try to get ahead of yourself. I will slap you if you forget to trust your gut. Don’t despair when the path is uncertain, as that is the way with the Wheel of Time. The wheel gravitates to where it is drawn: sometimes it will make sense, and often it won’t. If you have an expectation that the way will be all sweet and nice you are missing the point. Expect the changes. Expect the wonder. Expect endings and expect beginnings. Why do you rally against what your inner being knows so easily?

xiii-cremation-grounds-death-kali-tarot-prayer-cards-by-ellen-lorenzi-prince

I am Kali at the cremation grounds, you know me as Death (XIII)

Let us sit for a spell together, and contemplate what is uncomfortable to face. Yet notice, as we sit here together, how mesmerising it is to let things burn away, to let go of what is no longer here. I wonder, are those people who harmed you in the past still harming you now? Or is it your mind’s habit of replaying old stories that is wrecking your flow with life? Come burn with me, my children. I don’t want to hurt you, I am helping you stop hurting yourselves. What can you burn with me today?

xviii-old-moon-the-moon-kali-tarot-prayer-cards-by-ellen-lorenzi-prince

I am Kali of the Moon (XVIII)

Watch me drop, feel my weight on your skin, pushing you down into the place where it all began. There are no words in this place and no meanings either, but there is a seed of a memory that drags your consciousness back to an unknown time and place that you will never find again. What I say is not for understanding, it is for illuminating. What will I illuminate for you? Will it be the desire to keep moving when you don’t understand? Will it be the reminder of the quest that bites at your subconscious even when you are down? Will it be the call to dance with people who meet you in the dark?

IX Dhumavati (Hermit) - Kali Tarot Prayer Cards by Ellen Lorenzi-Prince.jpg

I am not Kali but an aspect of her: Dhurmavati. You may meet me as The Hermit (IX)

Let us walk without the labels, let us walk without the power. Let us drop all the perceptions of superiority and let it all hang out. Let us speak to each other without knowing gender or sexuality or culture or creed. Why do we need to know these things to relate? Why must we compartmentalise ourselves when we have so much richness of spirit to share? Let me in, Collective, let me push apart the apparitions of lies and deceit and find a place on the plains where we can begin to understand what the most important work is. Because, my dears, the most important work… the people of this Earth are not doing it right now, oh no you are not. What belief system or conditioning can you drop today so that you are one step closer to marveling at the cosmos?

iv-right-hand-the-emperor-kali-tarot-prayer-cards-by-ellen-lorenzi-prince

I am Kali, banishing fear, approach me if you wish, as The Emperor (IV)

My little ones, do you still seek the softness? Are you tiring of the dirge? I make no promises, but I will protect you when I can. If you do your best to open up, if you try to release the hate, if you attempt to stop the meaningless pontifications about things you do not understand, perhaps you will lean into my hand. I will do my best to drive away the tide of sadness, yet know that sometimes it is right for you to be alone, and there is wisdom there too.

I love observing the flowers you grow in your hearts while you roll around the planet. Even the disturbing flowers are worthy of note. Don’t forget to share those flowers though, my darlings. Who can you share your flowers with today? Who can you bleed a little for right now? Which being – human, animal or otherwise – can receive your honest message in this very moment?

On the back of each of the Kali Tarot Prayer cards is a poem that Ellen wrote. I will finish with the words at the end of each poem,

May Kali be Kind

And Be Thou Mine.

Tarot Reading for the Collective ~ November 2016

Dear Readers,

This month I am using the newest deck in my collection (and yes I aware of how I often I am saying “my newest deck…”!) the Pagan Otherworlds Tarot by Uusi. Not only are the cards exquisitely drawn, the card stock feels amazing – so smooth and silky. I love holding and shuffling these cards – and looking at them of course.

I wrote the questions and drew the cards for this Tarot Reading for the Collective the day before the US election, but didn’t have time to write the response until post election. While this reading can perhaps be read as a response to that, I encourage readers to consider how this reading could be reflected in what happens in your own land, wherever you are in the world. These are interesting times for all of us, and there is much to be acknowledged and worked on in all parts of the world, Australia being very much part of that.

So let us gather close and see how these cards can help us navigate these days of November (and beyond).

The questions for November are:

  1. How can we create safe spaces?
  2. Who can help us listen, heart-fully, to each other?
  3. How can we see through the storms?
  4. Who can help us learn to trust ourselves again?

How can we create safe spaces?

The King of Wands

king-of-wands-pagan-otherworlds-tarot-by-uusi

Remember to look ahead for the future safe spaces, but acknowledge that they may not be built yet. For now, keep your friends close as you walk about the plains of life. The wilderness is wild, but we are all wild within it, and we can get accustomed to the things we will need to do in order to remember how powerful and kind we can be. This is just another aspect of life.

If friends can’t be found for company, and sometimes they can’t, befriend a part of yourself that you previously thought intolerable. Create a safe space in your own heart and wrap it in moss and sit in the starless night with your intolerable thing. Perhaps that loathsome part was just scared. And maybe it is time to shake off the fear and start carving out new pathways that resemble the way your heart wants to grow and move. Can you feel your heart? Can you feel how it is trying to make sense of the strangeness of life? Give it a break. Place your hand on it and make an oath to stay with your heart.

Who can help us listen, heart-fully, to each other?

The Three of Swords

three-of-swords-pagan-otherworlds-tarot-by-uusi

Well, you may not have been expecting to see me in response to that question. I may not seem like I can help you listen heart-fully to each other, right now, but perhaps make you bleed instead?

We have been taught that opinions and divisiveness are more valuable than experiential wisdom and inclusion. With me, the Three of Swords, I will show you the points where it hurts and strongly ask you to sit with that discomfort. I want you to stay with the pain rather than push it away though blame, denial or disassociation.

When you can sit with the pain, you may start to notice that you are not the only one suffering. And you may notice that my purpose is not to seek vengeance or superiority or to announce that someone is right and someone is wrong.

I will help you shed the bullshit piled up between you all. I will help you face the storm. I will teach you important qualities of humility and insight. Know also, that I will rip away your dreams if you ignore me. Do not ignore this opportunity for self-reflection.

How can we see through the storms?

Four of Wands

four-of-wands-pagan-otherworlds-tarot-by-uusi

Trust in what you have already built. We may not get to sit in the castle yet, and perhaps we never will. Was the Collective expecting a nice, sweet outcome? A breath of fresh air? For so long we have been taught to ignore our intuition and our devotion to the planet, and to just shrug and put up with greed and bullying. Have we have lost sight of our capacity for true connection and understanding?

Are you able to work for a better outcome even if you never see the final product? Can you see my seemingly stable and welcoming FourofWands-self not as a future dream, but a moment in your day? Can you feel me when you share a smile with a stranger, hug a dear one, watch the sunset or stand by the river? It is the moments you want to connect with, and the accumulation of those moments will help you ride through the storms (which have been here for a long time by the way, but now more of you are beginning to notice them).

Who can help us learn to trust ourselves again?

The Queen of Swords

queen-of-swords-pagan-otherworlds-tarot-by-uusi

Ha! Trust! Now there’s a loaded word. Come and sit with me for a spell, dear Collective. I can help you learn to trust yourselves, but first we’ll have to get clear what I mean by trust.

I mean your choice to listen to and follow your heart, even if you feel silly, or fearful, or if others are telling you that you’re wrong. I mean your choice to speak up, strongly, confidently and clearly (and lovingly!), even when you can see the jackals gathering.

Be careful though of course, some people are way too deep in pain to hear your words. Perhaps they are so committed to blaming others instead of self-observation, that they think they will have too much to lose if they start to crack open their exterior of lies. Perhaps they have forgotten that the lies they told themselves were untrue in the first place. If you suspect this, set a boundary and back away. They can be approached in different ways later, when you are re-fuelled and empowered by solidarity and self-kindness.

But ultimately I will help you learn to trust yourselves by honouring the delicate beauty of the butterfly as you honour the sharpness of the sword. You don’t have to split yourselves off at this time. Remain whole, remain full, and try to hold even an ounce of love and yearning for true connection as you leave your sleeping spaces and interact with each other, in all your diversity and wonder.

Tarot Reading for the Collective ~ December 2016

Dear Readers,

We round out this year’s Tarot Readings for the Collective, with the all-encompassing Gaian Tarot by Joanna Powell Colbert. I used Joanna’s major arcana deck Pentimento Tarot for May’s Collective Reading, and eagerly watch for everything that she creates. The by-line for the Gaian Tarot says ‘Healing the Earth. Healing Ourselves’. I think we’re all very much in need of that, yes? So here we go.

The questions for December are:

What shall we say to the past?
What shall we say to the future?
How shall we stay with the present moment?
How can we nourish what is most important?

What shall we say to the past?
Seven of Fire (Wands)

seven-of-fire-gaian-tarot-by-joanna-powell-colbert

Say that you will bash away at your old demons and reshape them into something beautiful – or at least something you can live with. Don’t let those old problems fuel any present negativity. Feel the strength that arises from your experiences, yet trust that there is always room to be surprised anew by the ways in which people grow and change.

Focus on what demands your attention yet know when to back away from the fire. The other elements will always require your focus, and if you tread carefully, and watch your thoughts, the past need never consume you again. It may throw some heat at you, but it needn’t overwhelm you.

What shall we say to the future?
Strength

strength-gaian-tarot-by-joanna-powell-colbert

Say that you have hope for change that can benefit everyone, rather than dragging us all into a dystopian future. Seek out people who are wary of the hype, who search for the deeper truths. Start creating a future right now with the seeds you plant. Watch what you say to others, and what you say to yourself. Are you lying or are you speaking wisely? Are you living your potential future right now or are you trapped in fantasy land?

Acknowledge the strength of your heart by the company you keep. Be bold with the choices you make. There is no room for safety here, because safety was never something granted to us. What we do have though, is a desire to know who we are, what we are, what we are capable of, and what changes we need to create so that life can make more sense again. Muster the strength to help those who don’t perceive the powerfully mystical nature of this life cycle.

How shall we stay with the present moment?
Child of Air (Page of Swords)

Child of Air - Gaian Tarot by Joanna Powell Colbert.jpg

By staying with the breath, by learning to enjoy the trillions of things that are occurring in our individual and collective bodies in every moment. Everything here is so ephemeral, we are so ephemeral, why on earth are we trying to make everything stand still or go backwards?

Stay with the present moment because of the freedom it grants you. When you are here, the past stops punishing you and the future stops tormenting you. Little moments here and there of being present are fine, and indeed, all we can realistically expect when we have not attained enlightenment. So be with this beauty, this pain, this suffering, this joy, this grief, because right now it is everything, for a moment, and is your greatest teacher.

How can we nourish what is most important?
Child of Water (Page of Cups)

Child of Water - Gaian Tarot by Joanna Powell Colbert.jpg

[when this card came up, I was unsure, as I was thinking the Collective needed something with more oomf! So I popped it back in the deck, shuffled again, and lo and behold it came out again! At that point I remembered the water protectors fighting the Dakota Access Pipeline; the once pristine rivers of Aotearoa/New Zealand becoming unswimmable; the bleaching of the Great Barrier Reef in Australia; the polluting of the waterways of the world, including more locally to me in the Inner West of Sydney – the River Goolay’yari (Cooks River) in which we have been unable to swim since the 1930s due to industrial pollution. Alright then Child of Water – let us hear you speak.]

Nourish what is important by honouring the water. The water of the oceans, the rivers, the lakes, the streams, the puddles, the inlets, the water that dwells within your body and the sweat that pours from your skin.

Without this element, the life cycle is destroyed and you cease to exist. So stand with the water for once it is poisoned we are no longer human.

Also, nourish what is important by staying open in your heart. By letting people in despite the burdens you carry. Discard the debris you no longer require in any kind of relationship, but always revere those bold enough to crack open their heart to you, without expecting nor demanding you do the same.

Let me show you how sweet this moment can be, even if it is just for one moment.

Tarot Reading for the Collective ~ January 2017

Dear Collective,

To start 2017, instead of asking several questions for us to contemplate this month, I thought I’d just ask, which 5 archetypes can serve us best in 2017? Or rather, which archetypes can show us what we need to see, and help us stay on track.

This month I am using my newest deck, the Slow Holler Tarot Deck , which was collaboratively illustrated and imagined by artists with Southern (USA) ties or queer identities or both.

At the start of January it is customary to set positive intentions for goals we wish to achieve in the coming year. I am somewhat hesitant about the positive-intentions-alone-will-save-us spiel. Of course there is always room for beautiful moments of intimacy, connection and awe, but in the course of a year, all of us will face many challenges.  I don’t believe that positive affirmations alone will take us to a space where we can deal with all the uncertainties we face. This year, the Collective will experience death, illness, and sadness alongside the joy, wonder and beauty. Affirmations won’t prepare us for that, but if we are willing to communicate with each other as best we can, to be as honest and as upfront as we can, and to listen with our hearts as open as possible, it is more likely we can get through another year with enough wisdom and curiosity to keep on exploring this life.

So, the 5 archetypes that can serve us best in 2017 are (speaking to you in their own voices, as usual):

The Moon

the-moon-slow-holler-tarot-deck

Rise out of the muck and see further than you’ve seen before. Dare to renounce old wounds that do nothing but drag you back into oblivion. Speak from a place that is ancient and filled with chaos. Give light to what cannot be described cleanly or neatly. Roll with the complexities and trust that at some point, there will be a breakthrough. I don’t have any answers but I know how to push forth a catalyst that will point you towards the clues you need, to keep on moving and discovering.

Fortuna (Wheel of Fortune)

fortuna-wheel-of-fortune-slow-holler-tarot-deck

Spin with me, my treasures, and learn to read the messages that say stay here, move on, let go, gather speed, slow down, let go, let go. Learn to look for the signs that tell you when to embrace change, when to be spectacular in your pursuits, and when to go undercover. Trust that on the days you find yourself in a bleak space, somewhere in the world, someone is manifesting beauty and peace. They must be. On the days you feel peace in your heart, see if you can share your merits a bit further than usual, to keep the wheel on turning. Gratefully receive the small moments of wonder, even if they barely glimmer. And when the wheel turns, be courageous enough to receive the bountiful shares of hearty blessings as well, so that you can better face the challenges that always await us somewhere around the corner. Be as clear and as peaceable with your intentions as you can.

The Storm (Tower)

the-storm-tower-slow-holler-tarot-deck

Let me pull away all the structures that keep you separate from your true self. Let me reveal the lies and greed infusing the Collective. Notice me helping you to wake up to what you can do that can contribute to lasting change that revolutionizes our communities rather than disbanding them. When I come through, do your best to not fear me, and be ready to face the messages I bear, which will sometimes be painful. Avoid my most intense aspects where you can, by listening to and then following your intuition. I bring change, but it need not be destructive, unless you ignore me.

The Sun

the-sun-slow-holler-tarot-deck

Take a moment to bask in my warmth. Take a moment to recover from the day’s work. Remember to smell the flowers as often as you can, whether physically or metaphorically. If there are no flowers in your neighbourhood, plant some. Engage in guerrilla gardening, and bring back patches of sunny joy where you can. Don’t let uncertainty equal horror. Give the uncertainties the positivity they need to create themselves in more exciting, hopeful and cheeky ways.

Nine of Stones (Pentacles)

nine-of-stones-pentacles-slow-holler-tarot-deck

Let me help you take a cheery leap to the top of your self-made mountain, so you can see how far you’ve come, and so that you can feel the wind on your cheeks. Know what you can grow, and do your best to nurture it enough to share with at least one other member of the Collective. Be content with what you share, as you may never know how powerful your seemingly insignificant gifts can be. You are not here to just be pretty: you are here to kick up a stink about the things that don’t make sense, and prove to the ones who can’t envision a life without institutionalised structures that the Collective does not need to be contained by anything authoritative. The Collective can find much treasure by connecting with each other in open-eared, open-hearted and heartily brave ways.
