Dear Collective,
I’m doing something a bit out of the ordinary for this Tarot Reading for the Collective: I will be using a deck of tarot cards created for me by my friends at my ‘Salon Dada’ birthday party in April! By ‘Dada’, I mean the art movement from circa 1916 that rejected logic and reason and embraced nonsense and anti-bourgeois protest. Anyone who comes to one of my themed birthday parties knows that dressing up is an important requirement. Like this, for example:
And an on-theme cake is also vital, like this marvellous (and delicious) creation based on an artwork by Dada artist Hannah Höch:
So now, to the tarot cards. Firstly, I love this deck and I am really touched that it was personally made for me. Secondly, technically it’s not actually a tarot deck, as there are 33 cards not 78, and they don’t really bear any resemblance to traditional tarot imagery. However, thirdly, that doesn’t matter at all, as this is a DADA tarot deck so anything goes. And as this is a tarot reading using a Dada deck…. things might get a little strange.
There will be two parts to each question and answer: Part A will attempt to be sensible and Part B will embrace Dada. If you are unfamiliar with the Dada movement, you may want to do a quick google search prior to reading this, or, just have a genuine Dada moment and dive in without any explanation. Either that, or you can just ignore Part B.
To display as many of these unique creations as possible, I’ll pull cards to provide the questions as well as for the answers. Let’s begin!
This month’s questions are:
1a) How can we best showcase our skills?
1b) Why does an arrow create spasms flying fish?
The card that prompted Question 1: Strike – a – pose
2a) What must we stay awake for?
2b) Which bird stole the vortex?
The card that prompted question 2: The Night of Clubs
3a) How can we provide comfort for our weary bodies?
3b) How can we yodel when mice fly roosters?
The card that prompted question 3: Queen of Poofs
4a) How can we be more tender to ourselves?
4b) Why does a hibiscus drip gold on lanterns?
The card that prompted question 4: The Hanged Man
Are you still with me?? Let’s go!
1a) How can we best showcase our skills?
1b) Why does an arrow create spasms flying fish?
Answer: Repetition
a) Showcase by keeping on showing up. Just because a few people don’t value your skills doesn’t mean you have to change the way in which you are working. Keep on doing what you do best again and again and again, and eventually enough people will gather in support.
b) Because wildly mesmerising chicken-feed reverberates to the sound of e major and sometimes potato.
2a) What must we stay awake for?
2b) Which bird stole the vortex?
Answer: Love
a) Stay awake for love that is loyal, and by that I mean be loyal to yourself and the way you want to feel as you live out your existence. Stay awake for the moments that make sense in amongst all the chaos, and notice when you feel deeper and quieter emotions gathering around your heart. Notice, so that you can take the chance to say what you want to say, and hear what you most need to hear.
b) The bird that flew backwards while dancing to Prince. A great mountain: sandy togs.
3a) How can we provide comfort for our weary bodies?
3b) How can we yodel when mice fly roosters?
Answer: Flow
a) Provide comfort for your weary body by attending to conversations that unblock rather than tighten. Try if you can to keep company with friends who are happy to just show up, and don’t need you to do anything other than just be yourself in that moment. Friends can be human, or not.
b) By spinning tops leaking spirulina and catfish.
4a) How can we be more tender to ourselves?
4b) Why does a hibiscus drip gold on lanterns?
Answer: L’Enfant Terrible
a) Ignore the naughty ones, the ones who demand you turn up with absolute precision, every moment of every day! Set boundaries in situations that have gotten in the way of self-kindness. Be tender by embracing the grumpiest part of yourself. There is room in the grump for the snuggles.
b) Because missing signs tell monotonous truths.

This Tarot Reading for the Collective (or whatever that was) was done with the Salon Dada Tarot Cards, dedicated to me (Sarah Barry/Psychic Sarah) and created by the attendees of the Salon Dada Birthday Party in the Paperbark Grove by the River Goolay’yari (also known as the Cooks River).
And in case you are curious, here is a photo of the whole deck:
P.S My friends also made a little book with the meanings of the cards they created! I will just share one of the meanings here. The meaning of the Night of Clubs (see above to the second card): Your personal source of Party Energy. There is always an extra hour in you. ROFL!
