Dear Collective,
It’s a new year, and community and resilience is on my mind. In the last Tarot Reading for the Collective for 2019, I wrote that I was thinking of those living on burning lands as I was writing, but that my hope was that anyone could resonate, no matter where they lived. Now, in January 2020, the fires still burn – and will keep burning until there is enough rain to put them out. I am using Gaian Tarot by Joanna Powell Colbert for this reading, for a deck that honours Gaia (Earth) is surely one for these times.
This month’s questions are:
What pain must we face?
What do we need to create space for?
Where must we focus love?
For what do we need to allow more time?
Let’s begin.
1. What pain must we face?
Justice
We must face the pain that we have lost the intelligence to balance ourselves with nature, and that those of us who live in settler societies have too long ignored ancient knowledge held by Traditional Custodians of the land. There is pain, too, in the realisation that the next steps require humility and attention to the power of the land, and less focus on power in humans. It could be painful to realise that we must now absolutely rely upon one another in order to move through these strange times. If we have been taught by the status quo that asking for help is weakness, it is very likely that the status quo is wrong. It can be painful to see our mistakes and where we have misdirected our attention. But that’s not a good enough reason to pretend everything is fine and carry on. These things must be faced. So face them, with a truer sense of Justice.
2. What do we need to create space for?

Create space for big change that is far reaching and powerful, both personally, locally and globally. Be prepared also for dealing with those who will try to invent misguided distractions. Do not let them halt your purpose – educate them if necessary, but make sure your focus is on more empowering ways of living. Know that there will likely be tension in the days ahead, but that there is always something more beautiful to focus on than the lies that seek to limit us.
3. Where must we focus love?
Awakening
Focus love on what is ahead of us – the positive changes you wish to see for yourself, your loved ones and your sacred communities. Look beyond the pettiness of anyone who seeks to harm those who love without prejudice. It can be hard to imagine a time when the greater collective is able to have the utmost respect for sovereign knowledge – but maybe imagining it is a solid start. Focus love on shifting old perspectives that tighten and restrict, to new perspectives that open, flow, and reach out in great numbers to assist those who are willing to put their egos aside as best they can.
4. For what do we need to allow more time?
Guardian of Water
We really need time to explore the depth of our emotions, to allow the prickling of tears to move beyond the edges of our eyeballs, and into an open flow. We need more time for encouraging and expanding emotional intelligence. May we make more time for healing our waterways so that the precious resource that is water can still pass by our lips and into our bodies without poisoning us.
May we make more time for people who speak to our hearts and who know that sharing heart time is being accountable to themselves for ongoing personal growth. May we make time for beloved community, for love, for grieving, for creative action and for expansive justice that helps us expand beyond our fears into something too beautiful to imagine just yet.
