Dear Collective,

This month I am using Dust II Onyx: A Melanated Tarot Deck by Courtney Alexander. This deck is not only visually stunning, but is probably the highest quality presentation of a tarot deck I have ever come across. Featuring cultural myths, symbolism, history, and icons within the Black Diaspora, this tarot deck is unique and beautiful.

The questions for August are:

How can we best shift our perspective?

How can we balance our lives so that we stay in alignment?

What must we work harder at?

How can we sustain our creativity in uncertain times?

Let’s begin!

1. How can we best shift our perspective?

Three of Coins

We can shift our perspective by remembering the traditional custodians of the land we are living upon. We can acknowledge that this is, was, and always will be their land. We can remember how greed and unbridled desire for power has been damaging our communities for far too long. We also need to awaken our capacity for widespread insight into who the true abusers are. Let us shift our perspective by looking to see who helps out when they are able, and by understanding how we become more liberated when we aren’t always angling to place ourselves in a position of authority. Many hands hold communities together, so take a look around to see who is here, and who has been here in the past. Look to see who may be working almost invisibly – it is likely they who have created the warmth of space you may be enjoying.

2. How can we balance our lives so that we stay in alignment?

Papa Gourd

Let us balance our lives by looking beyond the dogma that separates us from each other. Try to see where the stories intersect, and lean into that. If it is too triggering to consider aligning with groups who actively harm others with their messages of hate and restriction, then take timeout from those spaces. Only lean back into those places if you feel strongly called to do so. Seek balance then in sharing your heart with those who sincerely listen. Allow your words to tumble forth from your heart in a way that strengthens your connection with life and all its mystery. We can all get stronger and balanced through our capacity to share our Cup (Gourd) with those who recognise us as kindred.

3. What must we work harder at?

Eight of Blades

Eight of Blades - Dust II Onyx by Courtney Alexander

We must work harder at freeing ourselves from bondage. We could try looking beyond the destructive untruths that are told to us from birth about who is more deserving of freedom and autonomy and why. We could try looking at truths that make us feel uncomfortable, until we stop seeking ways to relieve ourselves from the unease of that kind of deep introspection. We could look at the ways any privilege we enjoy denies others access to opportunity. Be uncomfortable with that. Work harder at sitting in discomfort and uncertainty without running away. Find others who are open to feeling deeply. Don’t wallow: break those chains.

4. How can we sustain our creativity in uncertain times?

Mama Blade

Let us sustain our creativity by firstly realising how important and how life giving it is. So it must be protected. Protect it by speaking of your inspirations and your gratitude for those who have paved the way before you, and those who are on the path with you. Correct those who see it as trite and unnecessary, they are probably only blindly repeating lies anyway. Support them in freeing their minds from diluted, mainstream garbage. Sustain creativity by sharing your vision without compromise, and always with the knowledge that as we move forward in these uncertain times, we must hear from a multitude of voices who accurately depict our broader society and take heed of their wisdom. Monocultures don’t have the answers that we need. Let us hear more from communities whose voices usually aren’t amplified, as that is where much can be learned and the essence of creative love will break our collective drought.
